Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP) recognises the importance of the ECAC towards improving health in the Union and commits to provide resources from the new EU4Health programme to redouble efforts towards the implementation of the ECAC.

A major action to achieve this goal is the so-called EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention, which aims to extend coverage and adoption of the ECAC messages amongst a broad and diverse population and across multiple devices, systems, and languages in the EU.

The mandate to design and programme the App itself is the subject of a separate call for a service contract. BUMPER focuses on providing input from experts and practitioners to the design of the App.

The app

The App will aim to influence the audience’s health behaviour by monitoring their behaviour and help them adopt changes, to ultimately work as a tool for cancer prevention through the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC) topics dissemination. For this purpose, it will be customised depending on the group the user belongs to and help people to take concrete actions to reduce their cancer risk. The App recognises the importance of the ECAC as not only the authoritative source of e vidence-based information on cancer prevention in the EU but also as key tool to implement Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP).

The ECAC is currently being updated to its 5th edition, coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The content of the App will be following the recommendations of the 5th edition of the ECAC.

Promoting digital health literacy on cancer prevention through the European Code Against Cancer – Best practices from the BUMPER project

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in Europe, claiming an estimated 1.3 million lives in 2022 alone. However, it is estimated that over 40% of cancer cases could be prevented by promoting healthier lifestyles and addressing major risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets, physical activity, and air pollution.

The BUMPER project has launched a new report outlining key lessons on promoting digital health literacy on cancer prevention. The report offers strategic recommendations to ensure the long-term success of the forthcoming EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention.

A total of 40 evidence-based general recommendations are included and organised into the following subtopics: Transversal recommendations, Research and Evaluation, Design, Validation, Promotion, and Dissemination phases.

Materials for promoters of the App

In this section you will find some valuable resources to enhance the understanding of health literacy and digital health literacy and how they contribute to cancer prevention as well as an overview of what the first EU App for Cancer Prevention offers. Within the scope of the BUMPER project, the project partners have worked to boost the usability of the App by targeting the health literacy and digital health literacy of both the end users and the organizations that will promote it. Below, we have included two informative videos along with their corresponding guides. We encourage you to watch the videos first and then download their corresponding guides for further reading.
