BUMPER project wraps up two years of lessons learned towards the EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention

Boosting the Usability of the EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention (BUMPER), the 2-year project funded by the EU4Health programme, concludes with a final event on the 8th of April in Brussels.

The closing event of the BUMPER project will gather experienced researchers in health promotion alongside experts in cancer prevention and digital health interventions. This event will take place at the Le Plaza Hotel in Brussels on April 8th from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM, hosted by the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), the project’s coordinators.

The event will kick off with a welcome speech by Dr. Wendy Yared and Helena Ros from ECL. Following this, there will be an introductory session on health literacy presented by Cristiana Fonseca from the Portuguese League Against Cancer and Nico Latteur from ECL. Two key panel discussions will be featured during the event.

The first discussion, titled “Equity in Cancer Prevention: Health and Digital Health Literacy as Social Determinants of Health”, will be moderated by Dr. Wendy Yared. It will include experts from various European institutions, including UCLouvain, the Portuguese Society of Health Literacy, the Portuguese Cancer League (LPCC), and the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community (Fisabio). This first panel will explore how social and economic inequalities impact cancer prevention, role of health and digital health literacy in reducing disparities, and strategies for engaging vulnerable populations and younger generation.

The second session will focus on “BUMPER and the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC)”. Moderated by Cristiana Fonseca from LPCC, this panel will feature experts from ECL, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology (BIPS), and the Reference Center for Epidemiology and Oncology Prevention in Piedmont. This discussion will examine the impact and future directions of the ECAC, the role of digital tools in cancer prevention, insights from the BUMPER project, and strategies for translating research into policy and public health action to enhance cancer prevention across Europe.

A keynote address will be delivered by Antonella Canalis from the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA), and the event will conclude with final remarks by Dr. Wendy Yared, followed by a networking lunch.

Check out the agenda of the event here.

Before the final event, on April 7th, the BUMPER Final Consortium Meeting will take place at the same venue. This meeting will bring together all project partners to review the achievements of the past two years, discuss the results of various work packages, and reflect on lessons learned. The agenda will include presentations from work package leaders to ensure a thorough review of progress and next steps beyond BUMPER. Experts Carolina Espina and David Ritchie from IARC will also present the progress related to the forthcoming 5th edition of the ECAC.

About BUMPER

Boosting the Usability of the EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention (BUMPER) is a two-year project funded by the EU4Health programme under Grant Agreement No 101079924. The project’s aim is to support and enhance the design, development, and targeted promotion of the first EU Mobile App for cancer prevention while ensuring its scientific validity.

The creation of the EU Mobile App is one of the flagship initiatives of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, designed to spread the messages of the ECAC regarding cancer prevention to a broad and diverse population. Developed by the company Netcompany-Intrasoft, the app will provide information to help individuals understand actions they can take to reduce their risk of cancer for themselves and their families.

The BUMPER consortium, led by ECL, comprises 14 entities from 11 European countries. The partners include experts in health literacy, digital health promotion, public health equity, and cancer prevention from academia, research institutes, and cancer leagues.
