BUMPER project: A step closer towards the EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention

Boosting the Usability of the EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention (BUMPER), a 2-year project funded by the EU4Health programme, has been set in motion.

The creation of an EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention is one of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan’s flagship initiatives to tackle the entire cancer disease pathway. This app will disseminate information on the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC), an initiative of the European Commission to inform people about actions they can take for themselves or their families to reduce their risk of cancer.

BUMPER aims at contribute to the design and development of the app as well as its scientific validity, in collaboration with the app developers, Netcompany-Intrasoft. The consortium will mainstream an evidence-based approach to address health literacy by engaging with a variety of end-users to understand potential barriers and facilitating factors for using digital health tools such as the EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention, and provide direct training to future promoters of the App.

“The App will be a key tool for cancer prevention in the EU, especially to target vulnerable populations and to address key health inequalities such as low health literacy.” – Helena Ros Comesana, Project Manager at Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) and project coordinator.

The BUMPER project is being implemented by a highly experienced researchers in health promotion and the implementation of digital solutions, supported by a range of scientific experts including the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) which is the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization and the coordinators of the current and forthcoming 5th edition of the ECAC.

“At ECL we have been coordinating efforts of our member leagues to share our experience and practice in the promotion and application of the ECAC among the general population, which will be key for BUMPER’s eventual goal of widespread promotion and use of the EU Mobile App for Cancer Prevention.” – Wendy Yared, Director of the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), project coordinator institution.
